Case Study #2
Wire Wrangling:
the ablated wire case
The Challenge: A global device customer required a long and precise insulated wire component.
The component has very tight tolerance sections where insulation is removed through laser ablation, causing its own challenges
in achieving a high state of control and normalized processes. Ultimately, this precision component needed to be transferred
to the customer’s offshore manufacturing facility once qualified. Most importantly, the new product was a Top Five corporate
initiative with a six-month lead time until launch.
The Avicenna Solution: We re-engineered our existing wire handling and laser ablation system to
achieve a high degree of process control for the tight tolerance ablation section. Avicenna purchased and qualified advanced
measuring equipment to meet the customer requirements. We did all this through a cross-functional project team that worked
daily with the customer to validate the process, and qualify and transfer the product offshore.
The Customer Gain: Our customer secured sustainable supply of a worrisome precision component
that once jeopardized a top-level corporate initiative. Through process validation and component qualification, the customer
met their new product launch date and then successfully transferred the component offshore, all within three months.
